On the 10th of December 2008, the United Nations plans to honor Pakistan's former PM Benazir Bhutto, posthumously with a human rights award.

This is the official to it on the UN website:

The list of reasons why Benazir Bhutto should not receive this award is probably endless but two of them particularly stand out.

1) In November 1996, as Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto gave the Army the green light to conduct 'Operation Cleanup' in Karachi as a result of which 1000s of extra-judicial killings took place and many political activists, journalists etc both affiliated and unaffiliated with opposition parties were tortured and abused. Most of the people killed in this violence were those belonging to the Muhajirs (those whose families migrated from India to Pakistan during partitions and comprise about 60-70% of Karachi's population). This has been recognized by Amnesty International as violence of a judicial level.

2) She was responsible to quite an extent for the creation of the Taliban (she herself admitted in an interview that she thought the Taliban would be good for Afghanistan). She has also been labeled the 'Mother of the Taliban' by prominent historian William Dalrymple.

We, as concerned citizens of Pakistan and the world, call on the United Nations to not bestow Benazir Bhutto with a posthumous human rights award based on her clear violations of human rights as shown by Operation Clean-up in Karachi in 1996 and her role in the creation and promotion of the Taliban, who went on to commit egregious violations in Afghanistan.
