Glendale, Arizona is a major city with a population of over 263,000. It is a destination location for many recreational opportunities including the NFL stadium hosting the Arizona Cardinals and a baseball training facility, Camelback Ranch, home to the LA Dodger and the Chicago White Sox. It has hosted the Super Bowl and the Final Four.
There are many tools that can be used to beautify a city. The initiatives described below will help to successfully beautify Glendale:
• Beautify all rights-of-way (ROW) throughout the city. All ROW should be free of litter, with adequate graveled coverage and the liberal use of desert plants and trees.
• Implement special zoning to cap certain retail uses throughout the city. Neighborhoods will benefit by placing a cap on uses that tend to be unnecessary in quantity or character.
• Implement a city incentive program to attract more beneficial retail uses
adjacent to neighborhoods. The attraction of these types of retail will create healthier neighborhoods.
• Support city council’s decision to add additional code inspectors. With full staffing of the Code Department there will be opportunities to become more proactive.
• Reimplement the use of “Focus Areas” in neighborhoods. Focus Areas allow the Code Department to concentrate upon neighborhoods most in need of attention.
• Reimplement the Neighborhood Revitalization Program. This program provides city funding, tools and resources to beautify a specific neighborhood.
• Reimplement the “Broken Window” theory with the city’s Police Department working in partnership with the city’s Code Department to send a strong signal to criminals that even minor violations will no longer be tolerated.
• Add art elements to neighborhoods. The addition of an art piece to a neighborhood demonstrates that each neighborhood is important and valuable to the overall health of our community.
These initiatives will not result in instant remediation but over time we can and will see our neighborhoods improve. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will beautification of our city occur overnight. The first step in the most important and that is to get each of these elements established and up and running. Your support of these various initiatives lets the city know that quality neighborhoods throughout the city are important to all.
Every resident in Glendale should be able to live in clean, safe and beautiful neighborhoods, free from crime and blight. It’s a quality of life issue that translates into preserving or even increasing your property’s value.
We are proud of Glendale and all that it has accomplished but there is more work to be done.
