Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-SC) posted on Facebook on Thursday comments that compared expanding background checks in the ongoing gun control debate to the genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda in 1994. He said:

"The 2nd Amendment is (or should be) equal to the 1st Amendment and the 4th Amendment and all of the others. Ask yourselves why it is under attack? Ask yourselves about a National gun registry database and how that might be used and why it is so wanted by progressives."

"Read about the Rwandan genocide, the Hutu and Tutsi tribes. Read that all Tutsi tribe members were required to register their address with the Hutu government and that this database was used to locate Tutsi for slaughter at the hands of the Hutu. Since the government had the names and addresses of nearly all Tutsis living in Rwanda (remember, each Rwandan had an identity card that labeled them Tutsi, Hutu, or Twa) the killers could go door to door, slaughtering the Tutsis."

Surprisingly, Rep. Duncan's comments show the US Congressman is not even aware Rwandans are mourning their dead, and the country lost more than a million innocent lives. To add insult to another, Rep Duncan deliberately used the comments during the commemoration week.

Rep Duncan's comments were clearly insensitive and cannot be taken lightly. American political battles should not be mixed up with the suffering of a nation. For that matter, if Rep Duncan really respects the people of his constituency, he has to come out and show he merits their trust.

We, the undersigned, call on Rep Jeff Duncan to withdraw his comments and explain to his constituency, the American people and humanity.

We also urge the US Congress to take a second look at Rep. Duncan's comments. The GOP also should take a lead role in this matter.
