On Aug 31st, 2012, Jesse George Hill shot and killed Amy Sands. Amy was not the intended target, and thus far Hill has been charged with 2nd degree murder, however the case is still being investigated. Amy had a troubled past and the crime took place in location known to police.

Only a few days later, Richard Henry Bain shot and killed Denis Blanchette and seriously injured another person at a political rally in Quebec, and is facing 1st degree murder charges. It is unkown whether Bain's intended target was PQ leader Pauline Marois, but he went there with intent to injure - the same intent that Hill had on Aug 31st. As in Amy's case, it is likely that the victim of Bain's shooting was not the intended target. However, the fact that Bain fired shots at political rally and Mr. Hill fired shots at a garage in a known drug house should not affect the outcome... 2 people are dead as a result of the choices made by Bain and Hill.

Additionally, Amy's father, Ed Sands, is a well-known, long-standing member of the Okotoks town council, which may have prompted the police to act quickly in the apprehension and conviction of Hill. Amy's death and Hill's arrest were widely publicized in the Calgary news media, a factor likely influenced by Dr. Sands's political standing.

Neither the context of the offence, nor the satus of those involved should influence the criminal sentencing procedures, charges laid, or media attention. A crime is a crime, regardless of where it takes place, or who is involved.
Whatever the background or social status of the deceased, the outcome and charges should remain EQUAL. We want equal justice for everyone.

We, the undersigned call on our Prime Minister Stephen Harper to treat criminals equally based on the crimes they commit, not based on the victim's background, context of the crime, or the social standing of those involved. A person is a person, they have family & friends that love and care.

No one person based on their political standing should be treated different. Let the punishment be judged on the crime and the facts.
