Lately there have been 2 highly publicised cases where criminals and in one case a mass murderer have been released early from British prisons, this is unacceptable.
#1 - Abdel Baset Ali al-Megrahi - the man responsible for the deaths of 270 people from 21 nations was released early from his meagre 27 year prison sentance because he has prostate cancer.
#2- Ronnie Biggs - jailed in the sixties for his part in the great train robbery where £2.6 million was taken and the driver of the royal mail train was very badly beaten, escaped after less than 2 years and re-imprisoned when he returned voluntarily to serve out his 30 year sentence was released due to illness after a series of strokes.
These are just two of the large number of people released. from prison under this law of compassionate release. GET RID OF IT.
We the undersigned call on the relevant government departments to abolish the use of compassionate release from prison.
We call on the secretary of state (both UK and Scotland) to refrain from approving compassionate release from prison.
