Abner Doubleday , the Father of Baseball , Civil War General and Gettysburg and Fort Sumter Hero who fired the first shot of the Union side in the Civil war.

Born 1819 in Ballston Spa,NY , he spent his boyhood in Auburn, NY helping his father run the local newspaper. He attended West Point, and graduated in 1842 with a commission in the artillery. Doubleday served in the Mexican War. He was at Fort Sumter when it was attacked, signalling the beginning of the Civil War. He aimed the first Union gun that was fired in defense of the fort.

He served under General Patterson in the Shenandoah Valley, June-August 1861. He was appointed Brigadier General, United States Volunteers, February 3, 1862 and led the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, III Corps at Second Bull Run and took command of the Division on August 30 when General Hatch was wounded. He again led the Division at South Mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was promoted to Major General, USV, November 9, 1862 and commanded 3rd Division, I Corps, at Chancellorsville, and headed that Corps when General John Reynolds was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863.

He then had administrative duties for the remainder of the war, except when he took command of portions of the Washington, D. C. defenses against Early's raids in 1864. He retired from the Army in 1873 and he moved to San Francisco, where he established the first cable car company in that city. Abner died in New Jersey 1893 aged 74 . He was buried in Arlington Cemetery. The citizens of NY erected a large monument with statue at Gettysburg and a big oblisk over his grave.

General Abner Doubleday is now a legend as well as a
soldier. He is part of american folklore as much as Daniel Boone, Davey Crocket, and other early americans. A stamp is fitting as we approach the 150th anniversary of important Civil War events and the 170th anniversary of the invention of Baseball.

We, the undersigned, petition the United States Postal Service Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee to issue the Abner Doubleday Commemorative Stamp. This would be a way of honoring the origins and legends of baseball our national past time, honoring the 150th anniversary of Fort Sumter, honoring the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg and honoring a man who gave his life to military service to his country. At key moments in the civil war the General made the decisions that held back the enemy and effected the outcome of the war.

Please honor the Legendary Father of Baseball, Civil War General and Fort Sumter Hero who fired the first shot of the Union side in the Civil war with this prestigious and ultimate tribute, by honoring him with an official United States Postage Stamp.

Sincerely,
