A Thank You Letter to Ban-Ki Moon

Your Excellency, Mr Ban Ki-Moon
The Secretary-General of the United Nations

We are writing this letter to you to express our gratitude for and appreciation of the positions that you took during your trip to Tehran. We are aware that, as you frankly mentioned in Tehran, many people, had advised you against going to Tehran.

We strongly believe that you made a courageous decision to go to Tehran. You may have paved the way for further negotiations and finding diplomatic solutions for the difficult problems that our homeland, Iran, is currently grappling.

What you did in Iran during your three days of stay brought delight to the millions of ordinary Iranians who are frustrated and repressed, suffering not only from the authoritarian and unaccountable governance, but also from tough economic sanctions and the threat of war.

You were completely right when you invited all sides, as you put it in your speech in Tehran, to believe in “the power of engagement, the power of diplomacy.”
It is remarkable that you emphasized that your trip and your positions were praised “by both the Iranian people and the Government leadership.” It is remarkable because it creates an opening for the dissidents that their fundamental rights are violated, dissidents whose criticisms and social activism are being interpreted by the Government’s leader as “a threat to the society or the state.”

During your meeting with the Government’s leader you urged “to release opposition leaders, human rights defenders, journalists and social activists to create the conditions for free expression and open debate. It is especially important for the voices of Iran’s people to be heard during next year’s presidential election.”

You invited “Iran to strengthen cooperation with the human rights mechanisms of the United Nations, in particular the Special Rapporteur.” You mentioned "The United Nations and the international community are fully behind the people of Iran in your long struggle for democracy and human rights. The first human rights charter was developed by Cyrus 2,500 years ago".

We would like to convey our very special thanks because of your brilliant echo of the voice an overwhelming majority of Iranian people, the voice that we and other Iranian freedom seekers had conveyed in our open letters to you.

It is deeply regrettable that the Iranian government turned down your request to visit Mr. Mir Hossein Mousavi, who has been under house arrest since February 2010, and to meet with former President Mohammad Khatami.

We believe that your first trip to Iran, as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, is highly valuable, in terms of both foreign and domestic issues, that our people are facing with. It has opened new horizons for better understanding, dialogue and cooperation with the international community.

We, therefore, urge you to pursue by all means the goals of putting an end to the gross violations of human rights, promoting free and fair elections, stopping economic sanctions, and preventing military attacks on our country, Iran. We believe that the pursuit of such noble goals are supported by the widest range of social groupings in Iran.

We take the opportunity to also express our heartfelt appreciation and admiration for your fair and balanced judgement about the achievements of our nation throughout its history, and in the contemporary time.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your support, message of condolences and very kind words, addressed to the survivors of the recent catastrophic earthquakes in the East Azerbaijan Province, as well as to the entire Iranian nation.

ما امضاء کنندگان این نامه، بدین وسیله می خواهیم رضایت و تشکر و قدرشناسی خود را به خاطر آن چه که شما در تهران انجام داده اید بیان کنیم. همانگونه که شما هم در تهران به صراحت اشاره کردید، ما نیز آگاهیم که کسان بسیاری اهداف سفر شما به تهران را زیر سوال برده و شما را به انصراف از این سفر فرا می خواندند.
اما ما عمل شجاعانه و تصمیم منطقی‌ شما مبنی بر سفر به تهران برای هموارتر کردن ادامه مذاکرات و یافتن راه حلهای دیپلماتیک برای مسایلی که سرزمین ما، ایران، این روز‌ها با آن مواجه است را تحسین می‌کنیم.
آنچه که شما طی سه روز اقامت خود در تهران انجام دادید لبخندی پر معنا را بر چهره میلیون ها شهروند ایرانی نهاده است؛ شهروندانی زیر سرکوب و در تنگنا، که نه تنها از حاکمیتی خودکامه و غیرپاسخگو، بلکه از تحریم های اقتصادی سنگین، و از تهدید به بمباران و جنگ نیز صدمه می بینند. هم از این رو شما کاملا برحق هستید وقتی از همگان دعوت می کنید که «به قدرت تعامل، به قدرت دیپلماسی» ایمان بیاورند.
این قابل توجه است که شما تاکید کرده اید سفر شما و مواضع شما «هم توسط رهبری حکومت و هم توسط مردم ایران مورد ستایش قرار گرفته» است. این تلقی به ناراضیانی کمک می کند که از حقوق بنیادین خود محروم گشته اند؛ ناراضیانی که هر فعالیت اجتماعی و هرگونه انتقادی از سوی آنان از سوی رهبری حکومت به قول شما به «تهدیدی علیه جامعه یا دولت» تعبیر می شود.
شما در دیدار با رهبر حکومت «آزادی رهبران اپوزیسیون، فعالان حقوق بشر، روزنامه نگاران و فعالان اجتماعی از زندان» را مصرانه خواستار شدید. شما تاکید کردید «این کار به بیان آزادانه و بحث آزاد کمک می کند». شما به درستی اشاره کرده اید که این کارها به ویژه «کمک می کند که صداهای مردم ایران در طول سال آتی که سال انتخابات ریاست جمهوری است شنیده شود.» شما اصرار کرده اید که «ایران به جاست همکاری با نهادهای حقوق بشری سازمان ملل، به ویژه با گزارشگر ویژه را تقویت کند». شما یادآوری کردید: «سازمان ملل و جامعه بین المللی به طور کامل پشتیبان تلاش دیرینه مردم ایران برای دموکراسی و حقوق بشرند. نخستین منشور حقوق بشری به وسیله کورش در ۲۵۰۰ سال پیش شکل گرفته است.»
ما مایلیم قدردانی ویژه خود را به بازتاب درخشان این صدای اکثریت بزرگ مردم ایران، صدایی که در نامه های  متعدد سرگشاده آزاديخواهان انعکاس داشت، از شما ابراز داریم.
در عین حال مایه تاسف عمیق است که حکومت در ایران به درخواست شما برای دیدار با آقای موسوی، که از بهمن ماه ۱۳89 در حصر خانگی هست، و آقای خاتمی ،رئیس جمهور سابق، موافقت نکرده است.
ما یقین داریم که نخستین دیدار شما، در مقام دبیرکل سازمان ملل متحد، از تهران از نظر مسایل خارجی و داخلی که مردم ما این روزها با آن مواجه اند سفری ارزشمند بوده است. این سفر می تواند افق های تازه ای را برای فهم بهترِ، گفتگو، و همکاری با جامعه بین المللی بگشاید، هم از این روست که ما برای شما این نامه را می نویسیم تا به شما اصرار کنیم که به هر وسیله که در اختیار دارید برای پايان دادن به نقض حقو ق بشر توسط حکومت ايران، برگزاری انتخابات آزاد، لغو تحریم های اقتصادی و ممانعت از حمله نظامی به کشور ما تلاش کنید. یقین داریم که این تلاش ها از حمایت گسترده ترین گروه های اجتماعی در ایران برخوردار است.
در این جا هم چنین مایلیم تحسین خود را به خاطر داوری منصفانه و متعادل شما پیرامون دست آوردهایی که ملت ما در طول تاریخ و در دوره های فعلی داشته است ابراز داریم.
و در پایان بار دیگر از شما به خاطر همدردی، حمایت و کلمات پر مهری که خطاب به قربانیان زلزله هولناک اخیر آذربایجان و خطاب به همه مردم ایران ابراز داشته اید، تقدیر و تشکر می نمائیم.
