East Reading needs to plan to increase the number of secondary school places available to families. The local council have bought some land in Crescent Road, adjacent to the UTC and Alfred Sutton Primary School. It is land designated for Educational use and has playing fields and some existing classrooms on the site.

The conservative MP for east Reading is promoting the conversion of the iconic North entrance of the Royal Berkshire Hospital on London Road. This site is located on a main road, has no outdoor space, playing fields or parking, and in addition, it is a grade 2 listed building and currently houses hospital clinical facilities.

We the undersigned are concerned about plans to convert the old front of the RBH into a school for the following reasons:

• It has no playing fields or outdoor space, nor the facilities to offer a broad and balanced curriculum;

• Road safety, congestion and parking issues associated with this site;

• The cost of converting a ‘grade 11’ listed building and potential damage to this iconic Reading landmark;

• The loss of hospital facilities.

We call on the Government’s Education Funding Agency to reject this proposal.

We urge the Education Funding Agency to consider funding a new school on Crescent Road, a site which has been bought by Reading Borough Council and which has both existing classrooms and playing fields.
