Implement a Diversity Requirement at UCLA Now!

Background (Preamble):
Everyone agrees that we have a collective responsibility to confront hateful and ignorant speech. All of us have the right to have personal opinions and express them freely. But all of us also have the right to not be subjected to discriminatory hatred.
If we confront hateful and ignorant speech only by punishing the person who utters it, we are not dealing with the problem but only with its instantiation. As the U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis said, "the remedy to be applied [for false speech] is more speech, not enforced silence."
That is why we need to institute a Diversity Requirement at UCLA.

Petition:
I support the implementation of a Diversity Requirement at UCLA, which would expose all students to the realities of a multicultural, transnational, and global society. I also affirm that diversity is an essential part of my education.
I support a Diversity Requirement that would install a one-course class that focuses in a central and substantial way on issues, theories, and methods relevant to understanding diversity in its broadest sense.
I support a Diversity Requirement that would be a part—not an addition to—the existing GE Requirement.
