On Friday 02-18-2011 The student senate voted on banning smoking at our school. They were very biased in their decision and did not allow our fellow students to speak more than a minute.
Their claims are:
1) It's unhealthy to non smokers -2nd hand smoke;
2) people don't stay in the smoking area;
3) people do not pick up their cigarette butts;
4) it's gross to smell smoke.
However there may actually be one good reason for not allowing smoking to be ok on campus (unhealthy) they do allow fast food to be made here, they do allow things that can cause diabetes here. They did not inform us fairly to the action they were going to take on banning the smoking, they in fact did little to fairly decide on what the majority or people wanted.
Their claims are not good enough reasons because:
1) Although it may cause 2nd hand smoke, people are going to get that anywhere and the school is not too concerned with health by allowing unhealthy food and drinks here;
2) People are unable to stay in the smoking area because there is not enough room, there needs to be a perimeter;
3) There is wind, and wind picks up and knocks over ashtrays and even then people who try to pick up other cigarette butts that may be on the ground have been told they were unable to do so;
4) True, cigarette smoke does stink, however, there is not ONE smoking area that people are unable to avoid if it is that big of a deal, we are all adults, there are smells a lot of us don't like and we have to deal with it. If it's that big of a deal maybe people should chose colleges based on what they do and don't like.
This petition is being put up due to the fact that people are not being informed good enough by our Student Senate. For the most part they are biased and feel that they should be able to make decisions on what they want, this is a community college and the STUDENTS should have a right to vote on things that will affect them.
The Student Senate did not do a good enough job informing people what this meeting was about since they have only decided to put the notice up in their office. They denies us our Constitutional right to speak our opinions-Freedom of Speech.
If we don't take action and sign this petition, things that people should be informed on are not going to happen. The smoking ban will cause more rights to be slowly taken away, take action, sign the petition to keep the smoking areas up, and by not allowing a few people to make decisions that most don't agree with.
It's your right to be informed, and your right to have rights, and smoking is one of them if you are an adult over the age of 18. Don't let them take that right away.
