In May 2008, former chairman of Newcastle United Football Club, Chris Mort announced plans for Leazes Corner, at St James' Park stadium, Newcastle to become a 'singing corner' for fans.

Mort told the Newcastle Chronicle: "Over the course of the year I’ve spoken to lots of fans about how we can improve things at St James’s Park. Two themes have regularly cropped up in those conversations."

"One was somehow creating a section in the ground where like-minded fans – who enjoy singing – can come together to generate a great atmosphere and get behind the team for 90 minutes."

Thus, the singing section at Leazes Corner was endorsed by Newcastle United Football Club and embraced by the fans. Many supporters, particularly those who currently hold season tickets in Leazes Corner feel that the corner is a success and the atmosphere in the stand is one of the best things about the home match experience.

As of the 2011/12 season, the club has decided to split Level 7 of Leazes Corner, St James' Park into areas for families, 18-21 year-olds and have chosen to increase the allocation for away supporters.

This not only displaces those who are currently season ticket holders in Level 7 of Leazes Corner but threatens the existence of a singing section altogether, which may have a negative effect on the atmosphere within the stadium as a whole.

We believe that the atmosphere that Newcastle fans produce at St James' Park is something that sets us apart from other clubs and other fans. Furthermore a loud, passionate singing section getting behind the players can only be a positive thing for players and fans alike.

Following a meeting with the club on 17 February, 2011, Head of Customer Relations at Newcastle United, Simon Esland said the club “look into relocating the singing section in another part of the stadium”.

On behalf of Newcastle United supporters, the supporter group UNITED FOR NEWCASTLE will present this petition in on-going meetings with the club, in an attempt to show that a singing section at St James' Park is wanted by supporters for the 2011/12 season and in the future.
