York University has not had a faculty club for some years and we miss the collegial and social opportunities that such a space provides.
We need a space to meet, to RELAX, to bring our guests and to run serendipitously into colleagues and friends from diverse departments. We need a place with food, beverages and atmosphere appropriate to a university faculty and comparable to faculty clubs serving universities across the country.
A faculty club would allow for better exchange and sharing of information across campus, and thus help to promote and enhance the interdisciplinary university. It would help to make York less a commuter space and more an academic community space.
It would provide a space to nourish new friendships for junior faculty and visiting scholars, and to maintain established friendships and connections across the faculties.
We call upon YUFA and the York University administration to work together to find AN ATTRACTIVE space and a practical process through which to create a restaurant and bar with healthy, good quality, inexpensive food, friendly hours and a pleasant atmosphere.
There are spaces in the Research Tower and York Lanes which might be feasible for this purpose. The space should be accessible to persons with disabilities. Should the need arise, we are willing to consider paying a nominal club membership fee to make this plan possible, providing the club is non-profit and the university space is made rent free.
