Salvia Divinorum (common called salvia) has in recent years come under attack due to irresponsible use and misunderstanding. Some are calling for it to be made illegal, but this is only due to fear mongering and ignorance on the part of those who oppose its free use.
There is a need for regulation, but only in as far as it is limited to use and sale to responsible adults in appropriate circumstances, just as is done with other drugs (alcohol, tobacco, etc.). A growing body of scientific research on the chemistry of salvia divinorum and its potential use as a medicine exists.
To make it illegal would be a step backwards for science, medicine, and society.
We the undersigned demand that the Canadian government keep salvia divinorum legal and that it not make any moves towards controlling it any further than reasonable limits of use of and sale to persons of legal age.
Undue restrictions on salvia divinorum not only limits its free use by the average citizen, but also use by scientists and doctors in the pursuit of research and medical treatments that may have the potential to ease suffering for those with illnesses.
