Augustana College is sacrificing its standing as an academic institution by creating a new student center that very few students want or need.
To fund this project they are not renovating Old Main, which needs these renovations, but they have also taken to essentially eliminating faculty positions like the director of International Programs, who arranges all study abroad academic opportunities.
Our mission statement reads "Augustana College, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and a Lutheran expression of the Christian faith, is committed to offering a challenging education that develops qualities of mind, spirit and body necessary for a rewarding life of leadership and service in a diverse and changing world."
By turning our school into a commercial institution, we are denying our students opportunities to a "challenging education" and not promoting the "[development of the] qualities of mind, spirit and body."
We, the undersigned, call on the Board of Trustees to rethink their their decision to reallocate the funding they have applied to the building of the new Student Center and apply the funds for the renovation of existing buildings (Old Main, Bergendoff, etc.) and our beloved professors.
