The South Asian elderly community is between 10-15% of an approximately 7 million strong and growing population of South Asian residents of the United States today. There is an increasing need for a generalized awareness in the care of these elderly and programs tailored specifically to meet their needs and health concerns.

Many South Asian families find themselves in a perplexing situation when faced with questions regarding the care of their loved one. Ethnic and cultural differences make the choice and the care of such individuals difficult. This results in large disparities in the healthcare available and the healthcare being provided. Having to leave your home and separate from your family is agonizing enough without having to separate from your identity. The added stresses of food, social isolation, culturally/religiously relevant activities, etc can and do prove detrimental to their health ultimately displaying a flaw in the system.

None of us wants to send our loved one away, but in the case that we have to we should be able to provide them with the best options available. Being able to debate options requires:

A) building those options;
B) educating the public about the problem;
C) and then its solution.

We, the undersigned, call on the organization responsible to provide social and healthcare programs tailored to our specific ethnic, cultural and religious needs.
