The President of The University of Memphis

Students majoring in Chemistry and Biology at the University of Memphis are required to take Biochemistry I and II. Both courses are offered in only one time slot and only once a year; Biochemistry I in the Fall semester and Biochemistry II in the Spring semester.

The majority of the students who take Biochemistry are seniors preparing to graduate. However, some do not pass Biochemistry I. Therefore, they cannot move on to Biochemistry II and also do not obtain their requirements for graduation.

This is a problem because Biochemistry I is only offered in the fall semester and can not be taken until the next fall and the student cannot graduate for another year.

We, the students of the University of Memphis, feel that Biochemistry should be removed from the Biology department and placed in the Chemistry department were it could be better managed.

In the Chemistry department, we feel that the faculty would show more interest in making Biochemistry I more accessible to students who did not pass it in the Fall semester and therefore offer it the next following Spring semester along with Biochemistry II.

By doing so, students could repeat Biochemistry I while also taking Biochemistry II in order to graduate in the Spring. We really wish our thoughts and concerns would be taken into consideration because this is a very important matter to the students.
