A HIGH-RISK Aberdeen sex offender who admitted he did not trust himself around children has escaped being locked up.

Lee Chapman pinned down a youngster and performed a sex act on him after the schoolboy called at his Aberdeen home on an errand.

The victim later revealed his abuser told him not to tell anyone or he would get a “hiding”.

Despite telling police he was afraid to be left with children due to concerns about what he “may do”, Chapman has avoided going to jail.

Instead, a judge put Chapman, 23, on probation for three years and ordered him to take part in a sex offenders’ programme.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Hodge told unemployed Chapman, who was listed in court papers as living at 375 North Anderson Drive, he would have to carry out 100 hours’ unpaid work in the community.

Chapman earlier admitted using indecent behaviour towards the boy, aged between 11 and 12, between November 2007 and November in 2008.

Chapman had faced a second charge of indecency against a younger boy, but the Crown accepted his not guilty plea.

Chapman’s victim had gone to his home to ask for cigarettes for a friend’s mother. But during the visit Chapman performed a sex act on the youngster.

The boy later revealed to his mother what had happened. Chapman was interviewed by police and admitted the offence.

Defence counsel Frances McMenamin QC urged Lord Hodge not to jail Chapman, who was assessed as having a low IQ.

Lord Hodge told Chapman he had admitted a serious offence but said he took account of his “significant learning difficulties” and that he had no previous convictions for sex crimes.
