For the purposes of this petition, we assume that, when it comes to gender and race, everyone in the atheist movement is completely well-meaning, and has every conscious intention to not be sexist or racist. However, we need to address the fact that the atheist movement is so predominantly, and so visibly, made up of white men. We believe it's important for the atheist movement to start paying attention -- now -- to race and gender.
We need to talk about how, exactly, a movement that starts out being mostly white and mostly male, with mostly white men in positions of visibility and leadership, has a tendency to stay that way... even with the best intentions of everyone in that movement. And we need to talk about why this matters: why it's a serious problem, why it's going to matter more and more as our movement grows... and why it's important to nip the problem in the bud, early, while our movement is still relatively young, and how to change that. This petition is a first step down the path to redress these unjust imbalances.
We, the undersigned, call on atheists, agnostics, secularists and humanists the world over to put an end, once and for all, to the perception that the public face of atheism is exclusively white and male. To this end, we pledge to socially, morally and financially support full gender re-assignment surgery for Christopher Hitchens. This bold move will send a strong message to the planet that the days of "white male" atheism are done, and the dawn of the new, all-inclusive atheism have arrived.
