Siting casual campers next to these local amenities will add a layer of concern for residents in regards to their children's safety (rightly or wrongly) placing an extra burden on school staff, and another layer of on-going work for members of the Owhiro Bay stream association who have done a huge amount of volunteer work to clean up said stream, in constantly cleaning up after those who do not do so themselves. This is not to say all campers are untrustworthy or untidy, but a proportion will be.
Owhiro Bay residents already contribute through the only refuse station in the city precinct, and an established freedom camping area at the end of Red rocks. It's time for another suburb to take some of the load!

As small as the community maybe, at the risk of upsetting and unsettling this community, I believe that other options neec to be looked at.

There needs to more consultation, collaboration and due processes put in place to negate the ill will and anti counicil, anti project feelings, otherwise you will again divide a community.

While the current council is to be applauded for their efforts in trying to make Wellington a better, more attractive place, the current processes and decisions being made are hugely divisive.

For example, the Basin Reserve, the Island Bay cycleway and now the campground.

We are too small to be fighting amongst ourselves like this. In order to progress, we must put aside our egos and the desire to stamp your mark or name on something.

Do not make these decisions without a full consultation process taking place. We have one of the best cities in the world and it's not called "The coolest little capital in the world" without reason.

If we can work together, we can achieve the results that we all desire.

3. I would like to know why we have to cater so much to freedom campers who are here on the cheap, spend very little and have nothing to contribute to the community.

4. I am also concerned about losing any dog walking areas which are few and far between, especialy on the flat. ( bad knee and back)
Unlike cyclists, dog owners have to register their dogs, get a licence and get very little in return.

5. What are the plans on how the council is going to manage/police and charge for any such sites. There has been no clear answer to this question.

6. Why can't campers use the numerous parking buildings around the city, (which have toilet facilities) pay a fee and be out by a certain time in the morning.

7. How about the area of reclaimed land past the ferry terminal?

Any camp site will need full time supervision and proper controls of who is staying there. This could easily become a half way house or location for the homeless.
Even with controls in place this is not suitable due to proximity to schools and homes and the climatic conditions in the area.

Our very close and small community with a school right in the heart so we don't appreciate an increase of unknown people coming and going.
The stream is also in danger of getting polluted with the sudden increase of population.
It also feels like it's a bit of an 'out of sight, out of mind' scenario and the spot is targeted as it's seen as a lower socio-economic area. Would the same proposal pop up in Kelburn or Karori?
To put it bluntly IT'S SIMPLY IS NOT SAFE FOR OUR KIDS OR COMMUNITY.

This should not happen in any form or fashion.
