Dear Commissioner Mayhew and Mr. Wheeler,

I am writing today to voice my strong concern regarding the Block Grant Peer Services Funds that have yet to be released. I want to make sure that DHHS understands how important peer services and the resulting funding matter to me.

DHHS’s lack of concrete responses or plans for releasing the Block Grant monies is not ok. I want to add my voice to my fellow peers and allies to make sure DHHS understands the priority these funds have in our community.

In keeping to the priority DHHS places on peer services, I call upon you to release these funds NOW as this is the right thing to do!

As a person with mental illness it has taken years to start recovery.

Mostly - STIGMA. Without knowing of anyone with my symptoms and struggles I felt ashamed and mostly hid my real self and my real struggles (and ended up in the hospital or crisis units many many times.)

The times I went to the Sweetser peer Center in Brunswick(overnight beds) and the LINC Wellness Center in Augusta- instead of being put in the hospital or crisis unit - I overcame what was happening to me in less time than places run by doctors, MH workers, or administrators. PLUS I really felt understood and less alone in the world.
Intentional Peer Support works. Peer Centers work. And yet as they grow - the resources don't.
When they monies are not available some places have had to close - and so we have no where else to get treatment/get back on our feet than the expensive ER, Mental Health hospital or state run Crisis units.

SO please release these monies. Check out the research on how peer support and centers are helping if you don't believe me.

The state wide network of Centers requested of the Maine Legislature a 10% increase, I strongly urge Maine DHHS to follow the intent and spirit of the Maine Legislature when they passed LD 477 by making the funds referenced in this petition immediately available to meet the wishes of the people of Maine represented by the Maine Legislature.

Why were request for proposals issued if the funds weren't going to be directed there? Proposals take hundreds of hours and financial commitment to create. They raise the hopes of many for change and progress but when there is no award you wonder if you should put the same enrgy into the next proposal. It is one thing if nobody had a qualifying proposal but a whole other situation to not award any money when there are good proposals tha met the requirements of the Requst for Proposal. Please put the money back to work where it was intended.
