Anonymous, Cumberland, RI
Petition organizers: Speak louder, not all parents are listening! Math Investigations DOES NOT WORK! Example: in a class of 24 5th graders, 23 didn't know how to divide 100 by 3! Or when shown a long division problem & asked to solve it, many 7th graders asked, "what's that?". Many states have thrown it out and gone back to basics. The entire world uses standard algorithms but here in Cumberland, teachers are forbidden to teach them. Massachusetts did & now they lead the nation in math!!

Mrs Christina Cipolla, Cumberland, Rhode Island
The root of the problem is that this town needs to buy/invest in math text books. Investigations is a text free program. A traditional math series paired with Investigations would provide a balanced approch to mathematical thinking/learning. My feeling is that this town would rather stick with a math program that does not garner results for a large majority rather than buy text books. I am also at a loss to why there is not a text/trade book base to the elementary science/SS curriculum.

I am appalled that this problem continues as long as it has. But then considering the school committee and the pathetic level of professionalism among them we as taxpayers are doomed to fail. Our children our failing because of the committees lack of integrity to admit to poor judgement and pompous arrogance. Let's get this issue resolved yesterday. Oust those at the top!

It's not only Math Investigations, but it's also Impact Math (being taught at the Middle School level). Our High School does not use this type of Math. Fortunately, they're still teaching traditional Math; but our children will be completely lost when they reach this level and will have to learn "our" way anyway. Can YOU see the horror in this? Over half of our teachers even agree.

Many teachers are not "on board" and are expressing "disobedience", admitted by Dr. Morele herself at the NECAP/ Investigations meeting last Spring. At that meeting Dr. Carney offered to provide communication and teacher aid info to the parents via website, but they have failed to provide even that. Imaging moving to another town over the border? Your child will be in remedial math.

They know that this is a problem and refuse to do anything about it. For example: statewide testing = 45% failing to reach proficient levels however school leaders feel it will pay off. Well at who's expense? The whole school system needs to be revamped. Maybe instead of the Wellness center they should have worked on academics. This is what my money is paying for?
