The laws are supposed to teach individuals then allow them to reintegrate back into society. These laws only serve as a lifetime punishment, that is not what our society is supposed to be. If an individual makes a mistake, serves their time they should be allowed to rejoin society. This law should only be for those that can not be helped, the "worst of the worst". It should not include Tier 1 or Tier 2 on a public list this should only be visible to law enforcement, and Judges with a much shorter registration time. To condemn people for the rest of their lives is wrong, it teaches nothing. The sex offender list has through 20 years of research shown that it does not prevent anything, other than to destroy the lives of offenders and their families. We need to base punishment on the crime itself, not on emotions, and each persons case should be looked at on a case by case basis not a one size fits all. It should also be uniform across the entire country not state by state or county by county.

My lawyer told me that if the case went to trial and I lost, there would be a mandatory 5-year prison sentence, so he advised me to plead guilty. But my life has been a nightmare ever since. I had never been in trouble with the law before in my life, and I merely made a stupid mistake. I am not a predator or a pedophile. I have Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism that affects my judgment. I am now a convicted felon and a registered sex offender on lifetime probation. These laws need to be changed NOW!

The Judge claimed she had been sexually assaulted as a teenager! In a bench trial, it was his word against hers. She won. He lost. Sentenced to five years and parole 3 yrs to life. We filed a post conviction petition on his behalf because we were not allowed to testify on his behalf because we sat in on the 'victim's' testimony. Upon release to parole, he was forced to attend sex offender classes, which he agreed to do. He was told he'd have to sign papers admitting to the crime, which he refused to do. Even if he wanted to sign, as many do, just to avoid returning to prison, because the PCP hasn't been decided yet, IF he signed, the PCP would be nullified. He was kicked out of the class, which made him violate his parole and he was returned to prison. The board now says he must admit to guilt or he will never be released! This man made the mistake of borrowing money and not being able to return it and his vindictive drug addict cousin who decided to teach him a lesson. She sure did. She also took a hard working, family man away from his wife and three children.

Enough is enough. REAL sex offenders should be punished, but that is not what is happening in most cases. Innocent people are left fighting a crooked system that ignores evidence that suggests the innocence of the accused. No justice in that.

In the US adolescence is considered to age 21, because it's a known fact that during those crucial years the Pre-frontal cortex in the brain isn't fully developed to help the reason, instead they are functioning primarily with the Amygdala which clearly causes impulse behaviors, they only think of the here and now. These young men aren't setting out to break laws, they are being teenagers and deserve a second chance and shouldn't be labeled unless it involves violence, force, or repeat offenses. And clearly many parents need to supervise more or be held accountable because a support system starts at home and is lacking in today's society
