Please add my name to the chorus of neighbors opposed to the semi-diverters proposed for SE 50th & Lincoln. I walk to my job, and my wife’s auto commute takes her east, so we are not among those who commute towards downtown by car, which I for one would find sacrilegious anyway.

Our objection is simply that the diversion would force us to take side streets for our local errands requiring a car. I have been an outdoor educator: this game of whack-a-mole reminds me of short-sighted policies involving tidal and stream flow, wherein streams are channelized, dikes built, shorelines armored in an attempt to prevent normal braided water flow and make wetlands dry for development. Just makes flooding worse elsewhere! What makes it actually easier to travel within older Portland (by any mode), than in the suburbs is precisely the abundance of “braids,” options, that allow traffic of all sorts to filter to our destinations by a variety of routes.

Please go easy on this trend of creating winners and losers tween cyclists and motorists. Don’t put more cars on Hawthorne, where all those black-clad pedestrians looking at their phones are in enough danger already! As for Division... really? More cars on that skinny little street?

In closing, in my view the quickest way to divert AM and PM auto commuters off Lincoln would be to find ways to improve the flow on Division, such as by widening it enough at 52nd westbound to create a L turn lane to 52nd, allowing westbound cars to not get backed up for blocks at that light, many not brave enough to pass the L turning folk on their R. If I were a commuting westbound motorist I would divert myself to Lincoln ASAP also!

The 50th and Lincoln is sandwiched between 2 super blocks so there is no adequate approach to drive to my house if this street is closed off to car traffic. Please do not place a diverter at the intersection of 50th and Lincoln.

We already have a Car Diversion at 52nd and Division, and also at 39th and Lincoln. Along with a bunch on Clinton Street. I currently bike on Lincoln, and feel that there is not that much traffic on Lincoln, for this proposal and its investment to make financially sense. I believe there could be better use of these funds in other parts of the city, that have dangerous cross walks.

I would hope you listen to my concerns, and that I'm NOT in favor of your proposal.

Speed bumps will suffice.

Division traffic is a parking lot most of the day because of unhinged apartment development. Bike traffic is very sparse on Lincoln outside of commute times. I have ridden my bike up and down the Lincoln corridor for decades and I have never felt unsafe.

We are not all able to commute by bike to our workplaces for various reasons. Given the sorry 3rd world state of many local roadways, this proposal is ill-advised. Prioritizing roadway maintenance would go a long way to making commuting by car or bike much safer and enjoyable.

"NO" to PROPOSED TRAFFIC DIVERTER AT SE LINCOLN/50TH STREETS

I support reducing the posted limit on SE 50th to 30 mph.

1. Continue east on Hawthorne past 50th, then turn south down a numbered side street. However, the city has already changed the Hawthorne and 50th intersection to discourage traffic continuing east on Hawthorne. A diverter on Lincoln Lincoln will cause an increase of traffic up Hawthorne past 50th, something the city wants to avoid.

2. Continue south down 50th to Division, turn left on Division, then turn left again into the neighborhood. But that’s 8 extra blocks of driving and two extra left turns, one at an uncontrolled intersection. Increases gas consumption and traffic on Division. If we did that once a day for a year, that would mean 2920 extra blocks, or 146 extra miles driven. Times that by how many people live in that neighborhood = significant increase.

I cycle downtown to work most week days, and I don’t consider the traffic on SE Lincoln to be dangerous. When I use a car, I would feel in more danger being forced to take a left from busy Division at an uncontrolled intersection, in order to get onto my street.
