He divided the class into Prosecution and Defense and asked us to conduct a trial based on the book. Never have I loved or learned in a class the way I did with him. Every institution should strive to have something that sets them apart, even from what are considered "elite" universities and colleges. Ari brings that to the table although that may not be as easy for an academic institution to see. Creative writing may be in the English department but it's also it's own art with the need for a specific sort of approach.

I may be wrong but although one can expect to teach a reasonably intelligent person to write a good academic paper, understanding how to nurture the new or newer writer develop both their skill and find their voice is
a different ball-park and frankly not sure there are many that can do it all that well.

For the amount of time and effort that he has put into the UNF academic community it is a shame that he has been passed over for the honor of obtaining a tenure line. I cannot think of a single person who deserves it more than he does. Mark Ari has put UNF on the literary map with his efforts to help create UNF's successful literary magazine Fiction Fix, as well as organizing an abundance of workshops and events to help keep UNF tied to the Jacksonville and country-wide literary scene. Take notice of the achievements he's made through and for students: Fiction Fix, River House, at least two self-published student-compiled/edited anthologies, Douglas Anderson coming together with UNF to celebrate writers and welcome Margaret Atwood, and everything else he's done since before I knew him. These are things of significance in UNF's name, and nothing to sneeze at, but none of it would have happened without Ari.

In no small way was this life path possible due to Ari's influence and inspiration, as well as encouragement. We have maintained contact over the years and he has written several reference letters that demonstrated his faith in me, as he has faith in all of his students.
