When I was growing up parents were expected to make this decision today it seems everyone but the parents are allowed to. My child vomited at school a few days ago(01/25/22), yet was not even sent to nurse. As a matter of fact her teacher told her she felt as if she were lying and to go sit down. My child informed me later that evening what happened at school only after she got sick again that evening. At what point did laws become more important than the welfare of our children. It seems to me that all these viruses and the current pandemic have only increased ever since the government and schools have intervened in the parenting department rather than allowing the parents to make the call on what is best for their child. I don't take my child to the doctor for every sniffle and low grade fever. I do however keep her hone , let her sleep,feed here soup, and make sure she drunks fluids. Instead of some intitiy telling me how to care for my child maybe they should focus on the curriculum and way they test our children these days. Leave parenting to the parents and start teaching our children the basic things like how to tell time and cursive writng.

I don’t understand how Horry County thinks they can tell me how to raise my child. I have never nor would I ever let my child stay home just for the fun of it. If my child misses school it is because she is sick. It is not fair for the county to expect parents to run their child to the pediatrician for every little illness. It costs money to go to the doctor for them to tell you this could be managed at home. I’ve even been asked why I brought my daughter in when I was already doing everything correctly in regards to her care.
For the first time ever, my child will need to miss 4 days for a family vacation that was given to us as a gift and couldn’t be used until this time due to my husband’s job being seasonal. I would say 70% of our trip will be educational, however I am expecting resistance from the school administration. I hope I’m wrong.
This current policy needs to be reviewed and revised to be a little more flexible.

You are told that an attorney isnt needed yet once you arrive you realize that was not the case. If you opt to come back with an Attorney you are told you should take the better option before Truancy Court or risk DSS referral. Actually what they dont say is that you have been referred to DSS as of that date anyhow ! So they insist your child has no more unexcused absences for that year and the next school year and Attend a Parenting class with your child that discusses content unrelated to Attendance and subcontracted out to a company , held in a church, and taught by uncertified teachers who attempt using Psychology and Religion to make "You and Your Child Better and More Responsible Citizens" . Seriously, at the time my Son was barely 11 yrs. Old!! He has been an Honor Roll Student since Kindergarten and actually a little sheltered of which didn't bode well when in this Parenting class, where there were nothing but troubled teens, my 11 yr old was exposed for the first time to dysfunction of this type with cursing kids , siblings yelling, and Door slamming Mothers discussing how their child grows and smokes marijuana and another Mother upset that her daughter is Lesbian. WHAT!! Imagine my horror when my child had never heard of either. Oh and I must mention as well that Community Service is Mandatory and my child had to rake leaves at the Church with the troubled youth that made a habit of skipping school ...All this for something that my Son wasn't responsible for and that was violating the ridiculous Attendance Policy! But wait, that's right, the school district considers children who are 12 yrs of age to be old enough to be held accountable for being truant , although they cannot drive or even are legally considered an adult, they are subject to jail time too!!

The States get Federal money based largely on attendance and that is the ONLY reason the policy is so strict. Kids have illnesses that don't require a Doctor. I know my child better than anyone and I know when she needs a Dr. and when she needs to just rest in bed (severe allergies and asthma). The AIP I was "forced" to sign also extends into the next "school year" until the end of the calendar year. WHY!!!! Attendance starts over in June when school ends, that's when the AIP should end. ABSURD!!!

It is always our intent to be present, but life happens. My kids are still able to perform top of class and scored high enough for Duke TIP and GT. Last year we missed 18 days, I don't send my kids to school if they are not well. I feel fortunate to have that ability. Please don't penalize us for it. The AIP policy should be based family to family. I don't like the threat of family court when we feel we are making the best choice for our children. This is the number one reason we are home schooling this year.

The doctor told us to keep him at home if he continued not to feel well and said to keep him on the tylenol that we had been giving him because nothing else could do better. Unfortunately the doctor excuse only allowed him to miss yesterday as it was written for him to return ro school today. So therefore, my son is at school with a cold as of today. Its not ok as it is, when people are sick they need to be able to recover instead of sitting in a classroom acheiving poor academics only because they cant hold their head up due to congestion, migraines etc. I bet you a teacher on PAID salary wouldnt go sick

I spent over $450 at doctors office so she was excused from school. The nurse constantly called me and I was always at the school. If she could have just stayed home a few days with asthma treatments it would not have been bad.

Parents should have more latitude in coordination with local educators to determine if an absense of more than 5 consecutive days, wether due to an illness or not, is part of a chronic truancy issue.
