Dr. Keith Berndtson, Park Ridge, IL, United States of America
I am a physician who has treated close to 400 genetically susceptible patients with chronic inflammation acquired by exposure to water damaged buildings. In my experience it is essential that MSQPCR methods be used in conjunction with investigation of WDBs by certified indoor environmental professionals. Also recognize the limitations of MSQPCR testing a post-remediation verification tool and applaud the call for collaborative research to find more predictive PRV tools for the subset of WDB occupants whose health effects include chronic inflammation.

Ms. Connie Morbach, Clawson, MI, United States of America
I frequently request ERMI analysis, but use the results primarily for the mold concentrations. I do find that the ERMI number is skewed when certain molds in "normal" group are also growing on water damaged substrates in the indoor environment.

Additionally, some of the molds, such as Ulocladium, P. chrysogenum, are not common in our geographic area.

Mr. Kevin Hazlett, Salem, OR, United States of America
It has recently come to my attention that the developer of the ERMI, an employee of the EPA and head of their mold department, may be receiving royalties from labs who use the ERMI. I believe this to be a direct conflict of interest and a possible reason that the EPA is pushing for these test. The guy who has the power to make this a standard directly profits from these tests. Evidence for this is at: http://orange-county-mold-inspection.com/ermi-documents/ERMI%20JOEM%202007.pdf

Unfortunatley many inspectors use samples as a means to determine if a mold problem is present or not, which is very poor practice since in my experience only about 25% of the mold problems end up impacting IAQ. So, using any technique, such as ERMI or Total spore counts is worthless without a field investigation to locate the actual mold growth reservoirs.

Mrs. Sharon Kramer, Escondido, Ca, United States of America
While I am appreciative of EPA's efforts to establish methodology in advancing the ability to determine safe/unsafe levels of mold within an indoor environment, I am of the opinion that ERMI is not conclusive enough in its testing methods to be accepted as an industry standard. It therefore may be counter productive to its own named goal and cause unsafe levels of microbial contaminenet to go undetected - thereby harming, not helping, those who are being exposed.
