We can't rely on municipalities in order to act. Regulations must be in place at a higher government level. Please act now as our health and lives are being affected negatively by toxic fumes. I believe that wood burning can be done in a very clean and efficient way and too much emphasis has been placed on the type of stove installed. That is often not the only solution a pollution free environment. The solution begins with conditioned/dry hardwood, having the right size of wood burning appliance for the size of the residence and being able to burn the fire at the correct temperature. Wood burning appliances should produce little to no smoke and a wood burning permit should be renewed every year so that the authorities could do spot checks on each house to ensure they are burning clean.

After 16 complaints since 18 May of this year, paramedics attended to my residence and I spent over eight hours in ER from wood smoke inhalation. We cannot enjoy an evening in the sunroom or in the residence because of wood smoke from "recreational" fire pits. Therefore, consider the Mayor and Ward Councillor's role as enablers.

Provided the fire pit or apparatus meet "standards" of construction and are not deemed incendiary (under trees, near fences or residence) no further action is taken, Frequently the material being burned is yard waste (observed performance). Regardless it is clearly written, bylaw enforcement officers are frequently at odds about the description of yard waste and lack the intestinal fortitude to enforce the bylaw: wood is wood.

If exhaling cigarette smoke in someone's face is unlawful, then smoking anyone out of their home is also illegal.

I would haphazard many residents have given up on reporting wood smoke nuisance complaints. My suggestion to city officials: Lead, follow or get out of the way!

He is an inconsiderate neighbor & keeps burning as the whole street around his home smells of smoke. We get the full smoke as we are next door to his east as the winds blow always from the west. Through the night you can smell the toxic smoke coming through the basement as heat from the fireplace seeps into the soil and comes through our basement wall and makes use cough.
Wood smoke is a mixture of solids, gases, & liquids. Much
like cigarette smoke, wood smoke contains hundreds of air
pollutants that can cause cancer and other health problems.
One of these pollutants that is of most concern is fine particles.
The particles in smoke are tiny bits of solids and liquids
made of incompletely burned wood. When you breathe air with
wood smoke in it, you inhale the fine particles deeply into your
lungs. I want to take action against this neighbor. Please advise what to do.

The noxious smoke gets into our house even with it all closed up, so I have to pay a lot more in electricity to run the AC, so they can save a few dollars and I have to spend more. How is this right? They get soot all over our house and things that are outside. I can't believe these things are even legal! It is like lighting a trash can on fire, inside your house, and having it burn 24hrs. a day, even when the people aren't home most of the time, they burn all day and night anyway. They are not like regular heaters that warm up the house and shut off. It is HELL having these things around us. I have repeatedly complained the township, health department, police, written letters, and no one will do anything about it. Smoking out your neighbors in this matter just to save a few bucks is SO selfish, inconsiderate and wrong, and everyone else has to pay the price which is way to high. I feel helpless to do anything about it. Ban them!
