Her heart is for History and her students. She used the same illustration to demonstrate to her students that terms we use in our culture can be offensive to others. She used Newport News N****** as a drastic example to make it relevant to her students who were predominately African American. At first we did not see Redskins as being offensive until we stepped into the shoes of a Native American's perspective and saw the reflection of our own race standing in that same place. If an African American teacher used this example, then it probably would not have been reported. Nonetheless, I understand the offensive nature of the word, but I am convinced that the intent was to educate and not offend. As an African American woman, I am not offended because our world is larger than black and white. Many are overlooked and discredited simply because of their race and if we continue living in our own circles without stepping out to see the world through their eyes, then we will continue in insensitivity. School should be a place where we can discuss “difficult” issues and subjects that challenge our ignorance.

A word so offensive, by the way, that even when reporting on it in a factual manner, it can't even be said and instead is referred to as 'the n word'.

Truth is raw and unbiased to parties, age, race, gender, or social class. Unfortunately, often times even in our sports arenas US history is distorted, only telling part of a truth to appeal to the majority and appear less offensive to our patrons. The truth about racism and racial slurs is that they are not equally being prohibited in America. Any derogatory or profane terminology used to degrade a nationality or race is offensive and unacceptable for all parties involved. Howevever, I do think this incident was taken out of context and it is a missed opprtunity for the school district to take action in this way, being that the teacher was using a cross reference to disapprove that the football team name is just as offensive. I am an African american alumnus of this school and I find it more offensive to see that the action taken against Ms. Pierce has little or nothing to contibute to the greater problem. I hope for Ms. Pierce return.
