20-25% of students in every classroom has some sort of learning disability. These are also some of the brightest children. Schools are ill-equipped to recognise or appropriately teach children that learn differently and have no funding to provide additional support. It cost me $200 to get my son diagnosed with dyslexia and a Irlen syndrome.
I'm saddened that Medicare don't recognize it to rebate even a little. Then there's the glasses that are going to cost over $400 which I get no assistance with either.
If we get these conditions recognized early then we are giving these children a better chance with education and their future.

I am super smart so managed to work out ways of coping. It affects my everyday life. I still see parents who know their children have a problem. Centres like Erland and others target people who have problems but are very expensive & variable in their effectiveness. We are pumping out semi- literate children from our education system. If you do not learn the full grammar of your language by age 10 your brain loses those pathways. It is better to then bring our standards up so that proper resources identify people with conditions such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, Autism ....the list goes on.

After a terrible first year at Secondary school and with my persistance he is now recogonised and receiving the help he should have received during his primary school years. He is 14 but his academic level is that of an 8 - 9 year old. It saddens me to think what he went through and the frustration he felt not knowing why he couldn't understand like other children.

It was the ad on tv showing a boy who would get the fuzzy's because he did'nt eat breakfast before school that got my attention. My son was watching that ad one day and said "that happens to me", " Thats what I see".

Alarm bells went off in my head and I started to surf the net for answers, until I came across the Dyslexia Australia Web site and got onto the Irlene Dyslexia centre in Melbourne.

Not at any time did his primary school contact me with any concerns with his learning, he was just another naughty boy.

It starts in Primary school and they need to be educated, there are many children that need help and it needs to be picked up in early years before secondary school.
