Horse slaughter is an excellent solution, especially in todays economy. There were fewer horses suffering when horse slaughter was an alternative. Unless we want to start paying tax to take care of horses that no longer need to be around, then we need to abolish the no slaughter law!

Some horses are dangerous to people and some others are so miserable (often becaue of pain associated with lameness) that the death of the horse is the best choice. And for those, slaughter is the best way to handle this. After all, if a horse is "put to sleep" what are people who live on small acreages to do with a dead horse?

We have raised registered Paints for 40 years and LOVE them. There are also the ones that are injured, unuseful for various reasons. The industry needs to be able to market them for a value and we are being deprived of this value as well as a base to our market. Lets stop waste. Unwanted horses are being abandoned, neglected and starved. Opening slaughter houses to back up for horses would give horses that have no purpose a purpose. These horses could be used as pet food, glue, fertilizer etc. and give people who cannot afford to keep their horses an outlet other than starvation. Ending horse slaughter in the US does not stop cruelty to horses, it increases it 10 fold.

The glut of unmanageable, crippled and useless horses , coupled with feed shortage is causing way more misery to horses than going to slaughter plants in the US could ever have. Horses are livestock and horse owners are being stripped of their rights to govern their own property. We need plants in this country with safeguards in place to protect the horses from abuse, enroute and in plant.
