Ms. Denise Frisco, The Woodlands / Conroe, Texas, United States of America
Not all horses are kind, safe and healthy. I would rather see vicious, neglected or abused horses be used for food. Not to mention, who is going to continue to spend money on taking care of agressive horses? Horse slaughter is an excellent solution, especially in todays economy. There were fewer horses suffering when horse slaughter was an alternative. Unless we want to start paying tax to take care of horses that no longer need to be around, then we need to abolish the no slaughter law!

The shelters are over run, and people have no place to send them. Euthanasia is oftentimes uneconomical to some who are already strapped for cash in these hard times. We must have a saftey valve for those who have no other choice. Pleas DO NOT support H.R.503/S.727, this will only throw gasoline on an already raging fire!

This is better than letting them stand out there and starve to death. If this continues I think PETA should take in all unwanted horse and let them feed, house and care for them - then they will understand what we face everyday and see the costs we endure and then get nothing for our good horse when we try to sell them

I live in southern Illinois and in my area there has been many horses that have been neglected or abandoned. What is going to happen when all the resue facilities don't have enough room for the unwanted horses? That is one reason why horse slaughter would be a benefit.

Some horses are dangerous to people and some others are so miserable (often becaue of pain associated with lameness) that the death of the horse is the best choice. And for those, slaughter is the best way to handle this. After all, if a horse is "put to sleep" what are people who live on small acreages to do with a dead horse?

We have raised registered Paints for 40 years and LOVE them. There are also the ones that are injured, unuseful for various reasons. The industry needs to be able to market them for a value and we are being deprived of this value as well as a base to our market. Lets stop waste. Use the unrideable non pet horses and put common sense to work. Lets get back to business as usual which was working. Butt out!

Carolyn Miller, Culpeper, VA, United States of America
The US horse industry is collapsing because there is nowhere for the bottom end of the market to go. Unwanted horses are being abandoned, neglected and starved. Opening slaughter houses to back up for horses would give horses that have no purpose a purpose. These horses could be used as pet food, glue, fertilizer etc. and give people who cannot afford to keep their horses an outlet other than starvation. Ending horse slaughter in the US does not stop cruelty to horses, it increases it 10 fold.

I have heard of horses being turned loose in state parks to fend for them selfs thats like taking a house dog or cat and thinking it could survive on its own I see enough of that now It is more cruel to let these animals suffer. cost to pts horse $400. rendering 300

Ms Arlee Fairbanks, Ada, Oklahoma, United States of America
The intent of the soft hearted people who tried to stop slaughter has backfired. The glut of unmanageable, crippled and useless horses , coupled with feed shortage is causing way more misery to horses than going to slaughter plants in the US could ever have. Horses are livestock and horse owners are being stripped of their rights to govern their own property. We need plants in this country with safeguards in place to protect the horses from abuse, enroute and in plant.
