Save Kauri Mountain - let the public decide if the NRC should purchase Kauri Mountain

The Kauri Mountain Restoration Society is a registered New Zealand charity formed by a group of New Zealanders passionate about the Kauri Mountain coastal area east of Whangarei.

Our key objective is to work alongside mana whenua to restore the viability of the natural ecosystems through regeneration of the native biodiversity, and to control invasive plants and animals in the area.

We also believe a unique opportunity exists to purchase Kauri Mountain Farm from the current owner and form a public reserve. We are working to find a purchaser who is as passionate about this incredibly special area as we are.

Oriental Bay dog beach

Winter is nearly over and dog access to Oriental bay finished this month (October)
This petition is to allow dogs on the small beach East of the Rotunda.
The main beach at Oriental Bay has been open to dogs over the winter with no ill effects. The dog owners who frequent this beach are responsible for keeping it clean from dog poop. In addition to this many of them collect plastic waste on the beach, saving the council doing it (or not)
The small beach East of the rotunda is contained and in the summer there are not many who use it, preferring the main beach.
Most of the dog parks in Wellington turn into bogs when it rains and are muddy and wet. (Cog dog park should have been called Bog dog park)
The increase in apartments in Wellington has increased the dog population with absolutely no changes to the amenities for several years.

Ban Plastic Bags in St Lukes Mall Auckland!

Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photodegrade – breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits. A single plastic bag can take between up to 1,000 years to break down, but as it breaks down, plastic particles contaminate soil and waterways and enter the food web when animals accidentally ingest them. This effects the animals hugely due to the fact that after ingesting plastic it can very easily kill them. Recently there have been large patches of plastic found in the middle of the ocean big enough to gain the title of 'plastic islands'. We have been finding different ways to get rid of plastic so that it is out of sight, but these actions still have a major impact on our environment. This is why we need to go straight to cutting down the amount of plastic we use so that our environment and animals don't face as much of a risk. We can start by removing all plastic bags from a single mall in Auckland, Saint Lukes Mall, Mt Albert. It is our goal to bring attention to this idea and make it happen. We have already done it in our supermarkets, so I'm sure New Zealand can make it happen in our malls too!

Stop the $30 Profiteering charge from SNZ

Speedway New Zealand has a new compulsory $30 online safety test for ALL competitors which is having serious questions being asked about its implementation and financial transparency.
On that post Keaton Dahm states the following...
"Interesting facts, Laurie Callender, former SNZ Operations Manager, starts a new company, Motorsport Safety Ltd (He is the Director) in June 2017, 'retires' from SNZ in July 2017, then pops back on the scene with a partnership with SNZ in the form of a compulsory $30 fee that all competitors need to cough up. That's $80,100 revenue based on 2670 competitor numbers in 2016-17 (AGM data). An online database and questionnaire does not cost $80,100 to create, so someone is making money disguised as Health and Safety, and its the competitors filling someones pockets. SNZ has $400,000 cash in the bank (AGM data), that could have been used to pay for the start up cost of the database and the ongoing costs of maintaining the database would very easily be covered in the $30,000 and $40,000 surpluses SNZ made last year and the year before. Seems really dodgy business given the Director's ties with SNZ..."
If possible please leave your comments on the original post so all info/comments are in one place. Here is the link to the original post by SNZ on their page.

Save The Penguins and Ecosystem of Shelly Bay Road from road widening.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO CONSIDER THE PLIGHT OF THE LITTLE BLUE
PENGUINS OF SHELLY BAY !!

Are you aware that the Council and Shelly Bay Trust are about to destroy an important Penguin Nesting Site and ecosystem with nests located just 2 metres from the roadside .By insisting on an unnecessarily wide road-approximately 10 metres and creating a concrete and stone seawall? Developers will remove this Penguin Nesting habitat and Recreation Reserve.
https://photos.google.com/album/AF1QipNHwe9iFKbeLQ25Vdw8eUmcBunhKIqFso5sicqo
Used by up to 60 or more Wellingtonians' daily in the summertime weekends ,it includes native trees and beaches used by families, windsurfers, divers joggers and cyclists-and Penguins!! .This iconic Scenic Drive, which includes Forest and Bird Penguin Nesting boxes on the Shelly Bay roadside ecosystem is located on the road from the Miramar intersection to the Shelly Bay complex.
With a very short public consultation time,it is being rushed through so no-one can object to this elite playground for the rich, namely a retail and residential complex to proceed at the expense of this recreational haven within minutes of the CBD. This is actually recreational space and land belonging to Wellington rate-paying residents who will be billed to pay up to $20 million dollars towards losing this invaluble resouce.
I am very concerned about a lack of awareness of this major iconic asset existing within only 6 minutes of the CBD! In any major city of New Zealand and the world such as asset so close to the city centre is highly treasured and preserved to enhance the essential and diverse recreational requirements for the health and well-being of a large urban population. So many people of so many ages and cultures have discovered and use this wonderful, accessible Wellington Taonga.
This is actually recreational space and land belonging to Wellington residents who are now as ratepayers about to billed to pay up to $20 million dollars towards this wholesale destruction of our recreational space .
What is this asset? People arriving from the airport or Wellington CBD are, in a couple minutes, able to experience a leisurely scenic drive through a classic kiwi experience of a native bush ecosystem including, pohutukawa, harakeke(flax), cabbage trees, karo, pittosporum and olearia to name just a few, uniquely growing right down to the very tidal mark. This provides a rich habitat which supports some of our wonderful native birds, including yellow-heads, tuis, bellbirds, piwakawaka(fantails) and introduced birds like sparrows and thrush and most important of all a sanctuary for our precious endangered Little Blue Penguin.
This north facing environment creates a bay with a unique aspect, sheltered from the wind and receiving nearly all-day sun. This allows the shallow beach to warm to a swimmable temperature, unlike Wellingtons’ many other more exposed seaside locations. Its’ very safe, slow receding shallows provide a welcoming place for all, from small children adults of all ages.
It is the attractiveness-the trees, bush, rock formations and people-friendly environment in the bay that draws people to use this wonderful, free asset. Widening of the road would destroy these ecosystems.

Please sign this form to object to the destruction of this iconic Scenic Drive Reserve..

INDUCTION OF NZ MUSIC PIONEERS/ICONS/LEGENDS TO NZMHOF

In a little country like NZ we are very lucky to have the massive calibre of extremely talented music artists & associated people that are involved in projecting the areas needed for these top musos that we have & we should cherish this by giving them the recognition that they so rightly deserve.
We as the public music lovers of course give them all the support we can unofficially but for them to have that official recognition it needs to come from the official people involved in that field which is the NZMHOF, & 2 inductions per year is not sufficient or acceptable.
We as Kiwis have always been brought up to be proud of the unity that we have in NZ so to have our Pioneer/Legends/Icons snubbed the way they are being is not only a direct insult to the artists themselves but totally unexceptable from the public supporters & followers as we would be elated to see them recognised & inducted into a reputable NZMHOF that their families & our children are able to relate to just how lucky we were to have this growth of NZ Music develop in our lifetimes which the memories & magic moments will be there for the future .....
But unless this NZMHOF is setup properly asap then we won't have those memories & magic moments there officially recorded for the next generations.
So C'mon NZMHOF Inductors let's fix this embarassing situation by announcing there is to be a major overhaul of the NZMHOF to accommodate the REAL PIONEERS of our music industry asap & in turn that will reinstall the confidence that is needed in the public arena as such!!

Making bail conditions stricter

Christie Marceau was murdered in 2011. Prior to Christie's murder she was kidnapped and assaulted by him. Police and Christie's family pleaded with the judge that he did not get granted bail. Unfortunately he was granted bail and lived in close proximity of Christie's house. Not to long after he entered there house and stabbed her, killing her. So many people on bail have committed crimes ending in a result like this. Its time to take action and change that.
