Richard Armstrong (http://www.richardarmstrong.info/) is an exceptionally gifted teacher of the Roy Hart vocal technique. (http://www.roy-hart.com).
Richard was a founding member, performer and director of the Roy Hart Theatre and studied for 8 years with Roy Hart until his death in 1975. Richard has developed his own unique approach to training and coaching artists of all kinds to find and utilize the power of their voice, be it through singing, acting, public speaking as well as how to access the best of ourselves as human beings. Richard taught for 30 years at the Banff Centre for the Arts, a 3 day introductory and a 10 day advanced workshop for students who have studied with him before.
This petition is to protest that Richard's International Voice Workshops have been cancelled at Banff. Richard and his teaching and educational processes have influenced countless artists and professionals globally. Richard's imprint and his impact on the performing arts cannot be fully expressed. Richard has been a most important guide and accompanist in our lives not only as students and working artists, but also as citizens of the world.
The workshops he taught for 30 years at Banff were extremely important for students, to have intensive time among peers and with Richard and his long time accompanist Marguerite Witvoet, to deeply drop into a level of the work that is hard to do on one's own. This made even more powerful by engaging within the thriving environment of the Banff Centre in the midst of the grandeur of the landscape.
The students do not just need Richard. Banff needs Richard's work. He cannot be replaced. There is no one like him.
He is most current in the field; he is what is contemporary. He is always new, and holds a strong connection to history and legacy in his field. His work cannot be discounted.
We, the undersigned, strongly protest the cancellation of Richard Armstrong's International Voice workshops at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
We, the undersigned, are distressed that we cannot continue to return to Banff and study with Richard.
We, the undersigned, are dismayed that Banff is neglecting to include Richard Armstrong's International Voice Workshops in their programming.
We, the undersigned, are shocked that Banff does not recognize the value of Richard's work, or understand the impact of his teaching on a huge, international field of performance and artistry.
We, the undersigned, ask that Banff seriously take the time to reconsider this loss for the field they have created. Not only for us, his devoted and grateful students, but for the Banff community itself. Over the years, Banff has expanded and has become more and more corporate. It is programs like Richard's that continue to bring artists to Banff from all over the world.
We, the undersigned, greatly regret that we are not coming to Banff this year, or any others, to study with Richard and deepen into the beauty of our humanity at a centre we have all greatly celebrated being at in the past.
We, the undersigned, sincerely hope you will realize the magnitude of Richard's work, and its lasting value to Banff as a historically rich centre as well as a contemporary home for the arts.
We truly will return to the Banff Centre to study with Richard in the future.
