WE ARE NOT TOKENS

Hey yall, I took time off last semester due to financial and personal reasons. The time off did wonders to my mental, emotional, and physical health and I do believe it was necessary and beneficial. However, Barnard is not upholding their end of the agreement. The agreement made when I was accepted as a low-income student at Barnard College. Barnard is forcing me to pay a fee they KNOW I cannot afford and if I do not pay it they will not allow me to return in the fall.
Dean Friedman literally said, “You are academically eligible to return but financially unable.”
I am a Higher Educational Opportunity scholar, also known as HEOP Student. I was literally accepted to a program that recognized me as a low-income student and living below the Poverty rate in America. The program receives PELL grant and the TAP funding from the state to the school so that it could support students like me.
I am asking for your help in holding them accountable, not only for myself but for ALL low-income working class students. They accepted my financial state and now are using it against me as a way to prevent me from a diploma they have already promised.
Please sign this petition acknowledging that Barnard must take full accountability of the promises (financial etc) made to Deisy Cedeno and allow me to return. In addition, please sign this petition further acknowledging that Barnard must begin to uphold the promises made to its low income, working class students. Our survival depends on it. #werenottokens
