This petition is to give the Mount students back their freedom, manhood, and justice. During the past few weeks I have heard multiple complaints about the new hair policy which states we can’t have our hair higher than 2 inches. This rule is way out of proportion and is affecting the Mount students including myself in a bad way.

We are being told that natural hair past 2 inches looks unprofessional and I don’t get how. Students always kept their hair neat and well groomed with their hair past 2 inches. Just because your hair isn’t past 2 inches doesn’t mean you look professional. As a long as you maintain it and don’t have it all over the place there shouldn’t be a problem.

The reason most students don't agree with this is because our hair is very unique and it makes us feel good about ourselves. Our hair grows out like leaves on a tree and it gives us a special look. When you take that look away from us it forces us to be someone we are not. Why should we be forced to look a certain way because our hair is different, why does someone else get to decide what unprofessional and professional hair looks like. There are many people in today's world that have hair higher than 2 inches and are very successful who still look professional.

We don’t come to school looking like caveman we keep our hair neat and well groomed. This new rule affects us boys because not being able to look how we feel the most comfortable affects us outside of school. Not everyone may feel comfortable with their hair that low and it can affect how they interact with people outside of school. When someone has a negative feeling on how they look that will affect them socially and the main thing is interacting with girls. You want to have confidence in yourself in those types of situations so that’s why we wear our hair in our own unique way to give us confidence but now that’s getting thrown out the window. Now our freedom is also being taken away and Mount is making us students feel uncomfortable.

Students already feel overwhelmed about having to shave especially seniors because that’s a part of our man-hood. Now we get hit with another burden that forces us to look a certain way. It bothers me that if there is suppose to be a professional look why teachers don’t have to follow it. This goes mostly towards the shaving because if there is a certain professional look then teachers most certainly don’t look it. Some teachers have thick beards that are the equivalent to probably 4 students combined. We are not asking to have our facial hair like Abraham Lincoln but to be able to have it while making sure it doesn’t past a certain length and to make sure it stays neat. If that can’t be accepted then the new hair policy needs to be changed because it’s really unfair towards us students mainly because we are being told how to look and that we only look professional with less than 2 inches of hair.

Not everyone feels comfortable with having hair that short and as a teen it affects us outside of school and how we interact with others. Our hair is unique to us and it’s unfair to force us to look a certain way without taking in the fact that not everyone feels satisfied with that style. We are we being judge by our hair and not by our character, hair doesn’t determine if you will act professional or not. Our character and behavior should be looked at not the style of our hair especially when we make sure it’s neat and well groomed.

We, the students of Mount Saint Michael Academy are calling on the administration to end the new hair policy.

This new rule is very unfair and forcing us to be and look a certain way that not everyone feels comfortable with. They say hair past 2 inches look's unprofessional which I don't get why we are being judged by our hair and not by our character. Hair doesn't control how we act and we make sure to keep our hair neat and well groomed.

Our hair is very unique to us and gives and us confidence in ourselves but know we are losing that and our freedom. We are being forced to look a certain way that doesn't fit everyone and that only hair less than 2 inches is professional.
