Campbell River needs an accessible, elder-friendly off-leash area for exercising dogs. That area should be the northern portion of Tyee Spit.

As it now stands, the city, while providing that site with garbage cans and free dog-pooh bags, penalizes owners by siccing bylaw enforcers on those who allow their dogs to play in this safe and confined space.

Council, in effect, holds out a welcome sign for dog owners and then shakes them down. Let the northern portion of Tyee Spit be declared an off-leash dog park.

We, the dog owners of Campbell River, British Columbia, formally request that council declare the northern portion of Tyee Spit (that area bounded by the northernmost parking area to the south; the western river shoreline north of the seaplane operation; the eastern oceanfront area across from and north of the parking area and the northernmost tip of the spit) to be an off-leash area for exercising our pets.

Bounded as it is by water on three sides, the area is ideal for keeping our dogs safe and secure as well as assuring very limited interference with other users of Dick Murphy Park and adjacent areas.

We note that the provincial capital has chosen to declare the heavily-trafficked area south of Beacon Hill Park as off-leash. Given the geographic features of the northern Tyee Spit area, declaring an off-leash park there would benefit both dog lovers and the general public.
