Dear Prime Minister,
Security, safety is our Nation's concern and it should never be compromised. However, after serving the rigorous full-time National Service for 2 ½ or currently 2 years, we still do not see the reason for prolong NS call-ups.
This proposal will not only benefit the NSmen, but their spouse / families and also employers who have to find a replacement while the NSmen are required for service. This will allow NSmen whom are employed, self-employed, studying, to focus on their businesses, commitment to the workforce and education smoothly. Also, this will help to reduce stress in our country.
A good force depends on the morale of the personnel in the unit / organisation or company. Currently, the NSmen is required to complete a 10 year cycle ICT after completing the full-time National Service. What we actually need is a short, informative and structural key training to maintain the interest of the NSmen compared to a long waiting time and repetitive training which either achieves similar results, if not better. Without this concept, we may have mass numbers of personnel in the forces with uncertainty on whether the existing system actually proves beneficial or needed. This may actually leads to a depleted morale in the respective units.
We want to highlight that this petition does not mean or intend to abolish the NSmen ICT cycle. Instead, we are proposing for a shorter cycle spread out till the age of 30. This allow us to balance our lifestyle and be a decisive force at the same time. NSmen can better focus on family, work, holidays, continuing education and will help to reduce stress. Also, for those veterans Nsmen who have completed their reservist cycle way back ago or just recently, we will always acknowledge and appreciate the efforts that you guys contributed for our country!
Below are the proposals on the changes that we truly believe will suffice NSmen training in our modern Singapore.
Day 1 - Refresher course (Theory)
Structured and informative theory lessons. This may include updates of latest technology, strategy, planning, resources etc. that requires attention and be up to date with the current organization of the NSmen.
Day 2 - Refresher course (Practical)
This involves the lessons learnt in day 1 to be applied practically. This may include combat training using latest technology and back to basics, medical/rescue, police studies, logistics, latest weapons/equipment, vehicle operating, technical handling, admin etc, depending on the vocation of each NSmen.
Day 3 - Shooting Range (If applicable)
Increase existing cash rewards to make it more attractive to aim for marksmanship. This will ensure NSmen prove their best and abilities.
Day 4 - IPPT & Fitness
Since health is wealth, increasing existing cash rewards for the attain standards in order to make it more attractive to aim for gold. This will motivate NSmen to maintain their fitness level.
No In-Camp stays (Stay-In)
Realistically, most men are busy in their life and are always contented to their loved ones, family and social life. What In-camp stay does is taking away that opportunity. There is no need for stay-in during “peace time”. All NSmen deserve the right on this as we are not in a state of “war”.
Make-up pay
Instead of just reimbursing the existing make-up pay, rank pay should also be paid. If we are somehow required to stay-in camp, overtime should be paid. Some of us in reality may work 12 hours, 8 hours or even lesser. This will ensure that NSmen is being valued for their time in contributing to the Nation.
We appeal to you to carefully consider looking into this petition. We believed that every citizen should be given the rights to raise any concerns to the Government when the need arises. These are the voices of our loyal Singapore citizens who really believe and are confident that it is time for a change to our NSmen system.
