Concerning the violent death of Tim McLean on July 30, 2008 on a bus in Manitoba. Members of the media contacted the family before the designated authorities and witnesses to the horrendous act consented to be interviewed by the media.

No consideration appears to have been given to the feelings of the immediate family. Theirs has been the only true loss.

We ask the federal government of Canada to introduce legislation containing regulations on how the media (print, electronic and internet) may report on violent incidents.

We suggest the following parameters:

a) The families of victims must be contacted first by the proper authorities, before being contacted by the media, and

b) any witnesses to the incident who may be summoned for testimony in judicial proceedings may not be interviewed by the media until the conclusion of such proceedings.
