In the Richmond, VA area, there are many and varied theater troupes which thrive and give back to their community. However, persons with disabilities have few facilities in which they might express themselves artistically, those with physical disabilities especially.
It is our intent to create just such a troupe in the Richmond, VA area. Working in cooperation with local advocacy groups, we intend to acquire a facility, modify it to accommodate all persons, allowing people both with and without disabilities to produce entertaining and brilliant productions.
We, the undersigned, hereby petition the Virginia Board of Persons With Disabilities to appropriate a fund sufficient for the necessary research into the creation of a theater troupe in the Richmond, Virginia area which is tailored to accommodate persons with and without disabilities of every kind. While we know certain theatre groups exist, none seem capable of catering to people with all types of disabilities, both mental and physical.
The creation of such a unique theater can and must only strengthen the self-advocacy which is already abundant in the disabled community, and would be beneficial as an example to the community of what people, all people, are capable of doing together.
