The Principal at Fern Public School has decided to participate in a pilot project to install a pay-for-water vending machine in the elementary school. This is under the guise that it is part of the TDSB eco-school initiative to eliminate plastic, single use bottles in the school. Fern has no vending machines, and does not offer a beverage service to students.

Currently, students are encouraged to bring their own reusable steel containers which they fill at the water fountains at no cost. The TDSB has been given the opportunity to purchase these machines, or install water filling stations, but have declined. This pilot project would have a corporation overseeing the vending machines and making a profit.

The vending machines will also dispense "flavoured water" at an additional cost of $1.00. The flavoured water contains sugar.

I DO NOT support the initiation of the pay-for-water vending machine at Fern Public School. I do not believe that children should be paying for their water, or offered the choice of a flavoured water which contains sugar.

I support reducing plastic waste at the school and would encourage a program that promotes water fill stations at no cost to the children.
