Mandalay mining is planning to put a tailing pond above a farm on their catchment areas for their dams which includes their home dam.

It will be a 30ha dam which will capture some 120 meg litres of rainfall which will not run into these farm dams. There will be no limits as to the water being pumped into this dam. It will hold salt, arsnic and other heavy metals.

The mine has now got approval to pump 700 megalitres of this dirty water a year into a facility that can take 120 megalitres, where does the rest go?

It will be made of clay, and clay is broken down by salt which is in high levels in this water.

Mandalay Mining plans to expand its tailing storage facility to meet its ground water extraction.

The rural community will suffer further impacts on stream flows and a real impact on organic accreditation and health risk.

Mandalay have not advised the community as to the number of additional tailing storage facilities they will require or in which catchment areas they will be located in.

We request that the minister requires the company to provide an Environmental Effects statement to determine if the development is environmentally sustainable for the long term health and welfare of the wider community.

Concerned residents of Costerfield, Heathcote and their industrial stake holders.
