United States of America

Since the school year 2016-2017, Wake County Public School System has informed Birkshires Community parents that there will be no longer bus transport for about 45 children from Birkshires Community who study at Cedar Fork Elementary School.

Since the beginning of academic year, Birkshires Community pupils along with their parents have to walk to and from school on a foot path that has to cross Old Corner Drive of the adjacent Gable Community. While walking to and from school, our community children are getting many scary encounters with cars that leaves Gable Community via Old Corner Drive to Town Hall Drive and vice versa. Given that our community pupils frequently encounter untoward incidents and accidents, the safety of our pupils who walk to and from school is compromised and pupils are hesitant to walk. In the winter months, walking to and from school will be treacherous, and dangerous.

Some Birkshires Community parents drop their kids by cars which in turn caused traffic congestion in the weekday mornings near school area. Congestion continues to be a nuisance in the afternoon hours as well. It takes over half an hour for parents to pick up their children and hot weather conditions are not appropriate for the very young children to be walking and most parents have infants they have to walk with as well.

We, the undersigned, in the best interests of the parents, students, would like to request the School Board and Transportation Department to keep school buses back into service for Birkshires Community based on pupils walkability risks and traffic issues.
