Alcohol/Addiction Counselling Services is in existence in Merlin Park Hospital for the past 25 years. It has established close links with the referral and support services and has become associated with the treatment of addiction in Galway. The amount of women accessing the service is greatly above the national average due to its location.
There is no other Alcohol/Addiction Treatment setting anywhere in the West of Ireland now with no plans to review this in the near future. In light of alcohol addiction problems escalating on a daily basis this is retrograde step.
We, the undersigned, call on the Area Manager Galway & Roscommon PCCC to retain the services of the Alcohol/Addiction Counselling Services on the grounds of Merlin Park Hospital.
This is for the benefit of its service users due to it being community based and the ease of accessibility - affording them confidentiality and privacy.
Many of the service users see the sanctuary it offers them on their road to recovery as a godsend.
