Melanie Phillips has a history of writing poorly researched, biased and bigoted articles. She remains a climate change denier in the face of near-universal evidence, and scorns the attempts made at promoting a fairer and more equal society.

Phillips has bemoaned the victories of LGBT-rights campaigners as 'un-Christian', whilst simultaneously promoting distortions, stereotypes and hyperbole in her treatment of other religious groups, describing the beliefs of druids as "totally barking mumbo-jumbo" (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1317490/Druids-official-religion-Stones-Praise-come.html). Most insultingly, she has argued that “without the Judeo-Christian heritage there would be no morality” (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1317490/Druids-official-religion-Stones-Praise-come.html), in a patronising attack on the billions of followers of other religions, or of none at all, who lead decent and moral lives.

Phillips has described “cohabitation benefits [and] gay adoption” as nothing less than “toxic” (http://www.melaniephillips.com/articles-new/?p=550), and decries the loss of the traditional family. The only qualification to being a good parent is whether you love your children, and that has nothing to do with your gender or age or race or sexual orientation or your marital status.

However, Phillips in a recent article (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1349951/Gay-victims-prejudice-risk-new-McCartyites.html) has described heterosexuality as “normal sexual behaviour”. Her comments expose a deep-seated hatred of LGBT communities, and a troubling acceptance of heteronormative assumptions in society. To describe heterosexuality as "normal” recalls the time when homosexuality was diagnosed as a mental illness, such as in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (changed in 1973), and The World Health Organization's ICD-9 (only changed in 1990) – both in recent history. Her comments regarding a “gay agenda” only further serve the interests of homophobes, claiming that very different LGBT communities are in fact a homogenous group which has some sort of global conspiracy.

Phillips’ comments are clearly discriminatory and deserve full reprehension.

A public apology is not enough; her sustained campaign to defame LGBT rights has emerged time and time again, and we, the undersigned, believe that Melanie Phillips deserves to be sacked by The Daily Mail.
