Nicklas Lidstrom, a notable Swedish-born defenseman who spent his entire NHL career contributing Hall of Fame-worthy performances and winning four Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings, has been honored with the retirement of his jersey number, 5. However, what has been less regarded is that Lidstrom shares this number with another prominent Wing who was among the first to wear it: Ebenezer "Ebbie" Goodfellow.

This Hockey Hall of Fame-inducted player was a key member of the Wings' first three Cup winning teams, playing as both a forward and defenseman during a period from 1929-1943 that is acknowledged among three "Champions" banners, but barely among the retired number banners.

Remedying this situation would stand as a reminder that players were accomplishing Cup glory for Detroit and the Winged Wheel even before the Production Line was first assembled.

As Red Wing fans, we care that the memory of such an early Wing and his teammates is treated with little honor, and therefore petition those who own and manage the Wings organization to lift Goodfellow's name and number to the rafters out of respect and gratitude; in hope that such a gesture will raise chances that others from the period spanning his career will receive the same honor.
