Morris played basketball at Auburn University from 1984 to 1988. He is sixth on the Tigers' career rebounding list with 860 for a 6.7 rebounds per game average, and left as Auburn's all-time steals leader with 189. His 36 points in Auburn's 90-86 victory over Bradley in the first round of the 1988 NCAA Tournament is a school NCAA Tournament record.

He played in four consecutive NCAA Tournaments, reaching the Elite Eight in 1986 where he had 17 points and nine rebounds vs. eventual National Champion Louisville as a sophomore. The Tigers reached the Sweet 16 in 1985 after Auburn became the first team in league history to win four games in four days to win the SEC Tournament, defeating Alabama 53-49 in overtime in the championship game.

Morris is fifth on Auburn's career blocks record list with 141 and is 10th on the school's all-time free throws attempted list. He played in the U.S. Olympic Festival in 1985.

Professional career, NBA
Morris was drafted with the 4th overall pick in 1988 NBA draft, TYING CHUCK PERSON AS AUBURN UNIVERSITY'S HIGHEST EVER NBA DRAFT PICK.

He appeared in the 1989 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, finishing 8th place out of 8 contestants.

On March 2, 1993, with the New Jersey Nets, he shattered a backboard with a slam dunk during a regular season game against the Chicago Bulls.

With the Utah Jazz, Morris played in the 1997 and 1998 NBA Finals.

Following the 1998–99 NBA lockout, Morris signed with the Phoenix Suns in February 1999.
