Target:
Attorney General
Region:
Barbados

For the past several years since the implementation of the loud music patrol, a vast number of shops, venues and entertainers (Djs in particular), all across Barbados have been suffering from the unfair treatment and policies that are part and parcel of the unit.

Due to the subjective manner in which it is administered, some venues are allowed to continue their trade even without permits whereas others are disallowed.

There are no set parameters for volume, which is measurable and therefore leaves venues at the discretion of individuals as opposed to following the letter of the law.

In the case where investigations are necessary, the process is sometimes protracted without reason and any attempt to get information is met with irate responses which leaves venue owners in fear of further victimization.

We, the undersigned, call on the Attorney General to put a stop to the harassment of shop keepers and entertainers who are trying to make an honest living.

We ask that the issuing of permits be for all and not just some and the permits be respected by officers of the law.

We ask that the subjective manner in which the permits are policed be rectified by the use of a decibel meter which can determine at a set distance if a venue is within the prescribed volume level.

We ask that where investigations are necessary, that this process be transparent and conducted in all fairness within the prescribed time frame.
