I have been a supporter of motorcycle racing in all it's forms for the last 20 years. I attend The International North West 200 Road Races every year without fail. However, it has become clear to me in recent years that this sporting event has become far to dangerous to be allowed to continue.

Far too many riders have died as a result of serious injuries sustained in crashes during racing and practice sessions. Speeds attained by the motorcycles have become too high and the circuit, using closed public roads, is no longer fit for purpose.

I propose replacing The International North West 200 Road Races with bicycle racing. The recent Giro D'Italia Big Start event has proved to everyone that bicycle races and bicycle time trials are popular with spectators and television audiences alike. International bicycle races attract thousands of tourists and sponsors are keen to become involved. Bicycling is rightly seen as green, healthy and sustainable.

Many motorcycle racers are also dedicated cyclists, using the sport for training purposes and to relax. These racers may even wish to compete against each other in well organised, well attended bicycle races.

We, the undersigned, call on The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure to abolish The International North West 200 motorcycle racing event in it's current form and replace it with bicycle racing on closed public roads within the Coleraine-Portrush-Portstewart triangle.

Furthermore, we call for this new sporting event to be free for all spectators who wish to attend.
