On the island of Diego Garcia, there is a US-UK military base.

"Nothing wrong with that," you might think.

But they also deported the entire native population of the island, and the surrounding islands in the process.

"Isn't that illegal?" you might again ask.

Yes. It is.

According to Article 7(d) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court which established the International Criminal Court (ICC), "deportation or forcible transfer of population" constitutes a crime against humanity if it is "committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against any civilian population, with knowledge of the attack".

This describes perfectly what happened on Diego Garcia and the Chagos Islands. The UK, however, did everything possible to undermine Chagossian rights, including wrongfully classifying them as 'temporary inhabitants', when most of them lived there for generations, and the UK also slaughtered their pets.

"Why is no-one doing anything about this?"

Simple. Because, firstly, of the above reasons, secondly, the International Criminal Court and the European Court of Human Rights refuse to accept the case of the Chagossians.

More information can be found here, on the Wikipedia page for the forced depopulation of the Chagos Islands. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depopulation_of_Chagossians_from_the_Chagos_Archipelago)

The undersigned petitioners petition the Comissioner for the British Indian Ocean Territory and the Prime Minister of the UK to allow the Chagossians to return home.
