Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is becoming a prevalent issue amongst Australian society today. Although it is an endocrine disorder that affects up to 10% of all women, awareness for this problem is still minimal.

One of the most obvious symptoms of PCOS is excessive hair distribution. Also known as hirsiutism, women suffering with PCOS have the burden of having to live with excessive hair growth that usually covers their entire body. Not only does this lead to severe emotional and psychological trauma, it is a daily battle that many women face. Due to this, after exhausting all possible options to eradicate my own hirsuitism, I was advised by my doctors that the only possible solution would be Laser Hair Removal.

PCOS is a medical condition and as a result, laser hair removal should not be seen as a cosmetic decision for these sufferers. It is a genetic problem that not only makes many individuals (including myself) lack femininity, but it has contributed to years of severe depression and lack of self esteem.

Currently, Medicare does not provide an item number for Laser Hair Removal for individuals with this condition to claim a possible rebate. If an individual has been diagnosed with a medical condition and has medical evidence, then they should be entitled to benefits provided from the Medicare Benefits Scheme.

I hereby believe that Medicare should provide an item number to allow individuals who suffer from a medical condition that contributes to severe hirsuitism the entitlement of medicare rebates if they wish to undergo laser hair removal, provided that they have medical evidence of the condition.

The Provide a medicare rebate item number for laser hair removal for PCOS sufferers petition to Department of Health was written by Kimberly Batsas and is in the category Health at GoPetition.
