The incessant ethnic, religious and political attacks on lives and properties in many states in Nigeria are caused by the appalling intellectual and political ignorance among majority of Nigerians.
The ruling political class is guilty of exploiting the ignorance of the poor majority in their power struggle and once they have secured their own families and properties, they no longer care about the fate of the victims of their political battles.
As corruption increases insecurity will become worse.
We write with a deep plea for justice, humanity and the enforcement of the conventional rights as enlisted under the European Convention of Human Rights and the Africa Charter of Human Rights. Much governance remains at the forefront of what has been done and continues to be done so. The right to protest is an enshrined right in all democratic societies and a fundamental right that should not be eroded.
The attacks against the innocent people come contrary to the understanding and beliefs of all nations, namely the right to expression, association and liberty and security. It comes in breach of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (Convention against Torture).
The overwhelming force as used by the rioters as well as the reprisal attacks are of utmost disgrace.
The number of Nigerian citizens killed is so frightening that government officials are not forthcoming in given exact figures. We urge all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from violence.
